About Us

Where is it?

Because how do you describe the place where we live and its people? How would anyone outside the area ever know that, behind the terraces of Haliburton Road there’s a river with crabs, catfish (recent catch!), kingfishers and boats with very strange names. Or the pleasures of an early morning bike ride on the Thames towpath. Or the pleasure of living somewhere where neighbours really matter (and natter). Not to mention a great Babysitting Circle , a Walking Bus and a whole lot more that makes North St Margarets very special indeed. Welcome!

Who are we?

We’re the North St Margarets Residents Association (NSMRA for short), an organization of local residents that meet regularly to:

  1. To represent residents to the council and other outside groups
  2. To lookout for issues of concern to residents
  3. To gather and share information
  4. To protect and enhance the environment of the area
  5. To coordinate social events and functions for the benefit of residents

Come along to one of our meetings!

What do we do?

The genesis of the Association was a public meeting concerning the future of Brunel site (now the Octagon), late in the summer of 2002. Afterwards, several residents discussed how they could ensure their voice was heard, so that the development would have some value to the community. By 18 September 2002, the Association had been formed, to fight what locals residents regarded as over-development on the site.

Since then, we have campaigned on issues such as:

  • the night closure of the Richmond Lock Bridge
  • for more – and better use of – local shops
  • odour and sewage release from Mogden
  • yellow lines on corners
  • overflights to and from Heathrow
  • continued public access to the octagon site
  • for local hosuing developments to make an Education Contribution
  • the establishment of Neighbourhhod Watch
  • more street trees
  • more parking and traffic control
  • more local schools
  • local pub opening hours

and worked to improve North St Margarets, including:

  • annual river clearings and cleaning, inc conjunction with Thames 21
  • facilitating acoustic works at the local church hall

Early on, the Association held a Cheese and Wine Tasting, so sucessful that the wine ran out and more had to be sent for! Following this pattern, other social events have been staged including:

  • a wine tasting evening
  • Jazz & Rock and Roll evenings
  • various Quizzes
  • children’s Christmas parties with the Scrapheap Challenge
  • the Great Annual Street Sale (9 times)
  • 3 Big Lunches (in conjunction with All Souls Church)
  • carol singings
  • a Mummers’ Play
  • Armistice Day remembrance
  • a history walk around St Margarets, in conjunction with SMERA & the Isleworth Society
