Short notice, but for those interested, something from HACAN

Public Meeting on Heathrow Operational Freedoms Trials – Thursday 9th Feb

On behalf of Mary Macleod MP I would like to invite you to attend a public meeting this Thursday 9th February to discuss Heathrow Airport and the Operational Freedoms Trials. The purpose of this meeting is to give local people the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns that they have with representatives of BAA.

The meeting will take place this Thursday 9th February at West Thames College in the Endeavour Theatre, 6:30-7:30pm. The link below will take you to a map of the area. The closest train station is Isleworth and the college is a 15 minute walk from both Hounslow East and Osterley London Underground Stations.

News – local schools, Twickenham redevelopment, meeting

News from the North St Margarets Residents Association:

Local schools

Within the area, there is a great need for more schools, with the

existing schools having failed to keep pace with the growing

population and number of school-children. Local primary schools are

near capacity with secondary schools poised to follow in a few years.

In addition, the proposed “linked schools” arrangments will make

transferring to secondary even more difficult. In this light, a group

of local parents has formed an action group with a proposal

(in partnership with the Russell Education Trust) for a new secondary

school in the area.

FORMAL SUPPORT NEEDS TO BE SHOWN BY THE 24th FEBRUARY.

There are other independent proposals for new schools in Twickenham

and Richmond. A proposal for a Catholic schhol can be see on Richmond

councils webiste at:

We encourage residents to investigate and support any or all of these proposals.

Twickenham station redevelopment

At the recent AGM, the looming redevelopment of Twickenham station

received much criticism, for the lack of social housing, for being

unfit to cater for the large number of match day visitors, for failing

to meet the station’s requirements. Again, an action grouop has

formed, the Twickenham Residents Action Group (TRAG). You can view the

proposal, sign a petition against it and signup for email updates at

Next association meeting

The next meeting of the association will take place at 7:30pm, on

Tuesday, February 21st, at 72 Northcote Road, St Margarets TW1 1PA. If

New School for Twickenham – Please help spread the word

An email just passed to us. Given the school situation in the borough, this is something we should all get behind.

Dear parent,

Our children have a great start at local primary schools, but secondary provision isn’t as certain – particularly for boys, or girls who would prefer a mixed school. This is a real concern for families in Twickenham and the surrounding areas.

The strain on primary school capacity is already being felt and this will push its way into secondary provision. There are also proposed changes to the “linked schools” admissions arrangements which may also have an impact on the secondary transfer process. We believe that there is a need for more secondary places in the near future and the Free School legislation allows us to shape the decisions; so that local parents get the kind of school that they really want. We are a group of parents who have pooled our local knowledge and skills to create a free school proposal for a new secondary school. This new 11-18 secondary school would be for all of the children in our community, regardless of faith, ability or gender.

High Standards – our partnership with the Russell Education Trust

We want a secondary school that will deliver high academic standards and foster excellent behaviour and social responsibility in our children, so we are working in partnership with the Russell Education Trust (RET) to set up and run the school. RET set up the largest Free School to open in September 2011 and they are opening another 11-18 secondary school in Essex, in September 2012. The Trust is led and staffed by experienced headteachers, Ofsted inspectors and academic specialists; and they work in partnership with existing outstanding schools in London and the south of England. RET is working closely with us to turn our vision into reality.

Is this different to the proposed Catholic Secondary that we’ve seen in the Press?

Yes this is a different proposal. It will not be a faith-based school. But we completely understand the frustrations that many Catholic parents in Richmond (and neighbouring boroughs) feel about the lack of Catholic school places at secondary level. We are not opposing the Catholic school proposal, and it may be possible that both schools are approved. Both proposers are currently interested in the Clifden Road site, but that’s not to say that other sites may not be available; and we will explore all possibilities.

Now we need to prove that there is enough local demand for a new outstanding secondary school. If you have children (especially in years 3 to 5 as they could be our first year groups) please fill in the registration form on our website www.newlocalschool4twickenham.org.uk to show your interest. We need to know exactly how much support we have when we submit our proposal in February.

Lost kitten

We seem to have lost Thandi, yesterday, Monday , 23 January . She was last seen at about 13h00. She is ginger in colour and should be wearing a red collar with her tag on it. My telephone number and our surname , Palmer is on the tag. She is about 9 months old . Please check sheds or garages , as she may have wondered in without being noticed and then accidently been shut inside. Thandi, is micro chipped and if she is taken to a vet and scanned , she will come up as lost on their system as I have reported her lost last night to Petlog.

Thanks to all who showed up at the AGM last night, and particular thanks to the councillors and police who made time in their busy schedule. Who those who weren’t there, hot topics included parking, schools and the redevelopment of Twickenham station. The association will be pursuing these in the near future, and updates will be posted to the website as will meeting dates for this year.
